Replacement of Awards & Recognitions Earned - DD214

One of the most consistent irregularities we see at Military Memories when working with family members and veterans is the lack of information as to what they already have or were authorized to wear.  Because of the "Typewriter Era" from the 1940's to the 1990's most DD 214 forms are almost always lacking information such as; medals, ribbons, qualification awards, training, overseas assignments and promotions.  For whatever reason, this information was never placed into the files to reflect the veteran's accomplishments.

Here are a few examples of the most common DD214 deficiencies that we see:

  • After serving in the military for a period of 2 to 6 years and Honorably Discharged, there is no record of even one Good Conduct Medal being awarded.

  • Many units were awarded Unit Citations.  Although we see many Veterans served with these units during the time the Unit Citation was awarded, the Veteran has no knowledge they are entitled to wear the Unit Citation awarded.

  • Those Veterans who made Combat Jumps during WWII have nothing reflecting this on their DD214's.

  • Those Veterans who served overseas during WWII should have been awarded the following Medals.

    • American Campaign Medal

    • Either the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal or the European-African- Middle Eastern Campaign Medal (Depending on the Theater of Operation)

    • WWII Victory Medal usually records only show the WWII Victory Medal.

  • Many of the records, for all wars, fail to show the number of Campaign Stars each Veteran earned (if any) for participation in a Campaign.  At Military Memories, we will help you receive all of the military medals and awards you or your loved one have earned.

Medals & Awards Information

During WWII brass was used primarily for munitions to support the war effort and many soldiers, sailors and marines never received their Campaign Medals.

After WWII in 1947 many Combat Infantrymen and Combat Medics were authorized the Bronze Star Medal but were never notified by the U.S. Government.

Korean War Veterans were never awarded the ROK War Service Medal until 46 years after the War and many are still unaware that they have earned this medal.

Veterans serving in Korea after the Korean War from 1954 to present are authorized to wear the Korean Defense Service Medal.
